If Jesus came to give life in all its fulness, what might this mean for queer Christians? What might it mean to move beyond tolerance and acceptance towards queer flourishing? If, as Moltmann suggests, religion is a religion of joy, what might queer joy look like? In this session, I'll begin to explore some of the foundational ideas I'm working on as I look to develop an understanding of queer joy, drawing upon Jürgen Moltmann's theology of joy and Marcella Althaus-Reid's queer theology.

Gary Hopkins is a queer Christian currently working towards a doctorate in practical theology at Roehampton University. He is ministry development officer for chaplaincy and lay ministries in the Methodist Church and was national coordinator of Outcome, the Methodist LGBTQ+ organisation. Gary enjoys being creative, whether that be through playing piano, cooking, gardening or even DIY. He is a local preacher and has written several hymns, including a hymn in the Methodist hymn book, Singing the Faith. He can often be found touring about in his self-converted campervan, trying to taste the freedom of a little bit of #vanlife! Prior to life working for the Methodist Church, Gary worked in both primary and secondary education serving as a senior leader for ten years.

This meeting will also be broadcast via zoom. Please email for details.
