It used to be something that people treasured as a common possession, and then came the print era and academics. It can be argued that, since the Reformation, the alleged ‘democratisation’ of the Bible has taken it further from lay people rather than closer to them.

At our May meeting we discussed and decided to each read the book, chapter by chapter, 'The Meaning in the Miracles' by Jeffrey John (2002). We think that the book divides very well into chapters that one or two of us might lead in successive meetings. Our intention is for each of us to obtain a copy over the next few weeks and read it!

This will be our annual evaluation and planning session, and is our final meeting before the summer break. It is an important meeting, at which members are invited to comment on this past year's programme, and then to brain-storm ideas and suggestions for the new session. It is entirely from these suggestions that the planning group then aims to select and set up a new programme. That we try to sort out during the summer months and will hope to get plans for 2014-2015 finalised, ready to resume our group meetings post-festival in September... The evening traditionally finishes with a taste of some light summer refreshment!
Monday 23 June 2014

PLEASE NOTE CHANGE OF DATE. Our final meeting for this session - there will be no meetings during July or August. We aim to plan ahead for autumn, so please come along with any ideas as to what you would like to do.

Cosmology addresses fundamental questions about the Universe of the kind which have traditionally been in the religious domain. At first sight this perspective seems to pull science and religion apart removing any need for the divine. However recent developments have led to a reversal of this trend suggesting that consciousness, mind and spirit are an integral part of the universe.

Is there a place for church within progressive expressions of Christianity, which tend to sit uneasily with theological orthodoxy, prescribed liturgies and hierarchical structures of authority? Many liberals and progressives feel alienated from traditional forms of church and are hanging on by their fingertips or have already given up and left.
