Is an open and affirming church possible?

It has been said the liberal Christians lack passion and that without more 'belief' a church would not survive. Is religion only for those with certainty?

“Celebrating Sanctuary, the road ahead”

We would like to invite you join us for the event “Celebrating Sanctuary, the road ahead” on the morning of Saturday 3 July. With the centrally managed Sanctuary Everywhere programme coming to an end shortly, we would like to use this online space to celebrate the last few years of Sanctuary work. It will also be a space to make connections and find out how sanctuary meetings can continue to access support as we prepare to move on to a new phase of our witness work.

This event is open to all Friends from Sanctuary meetings, the Quaker Asylum and Refugee Network (QARN) and those who have been creating sanctuary during the last few years and decades.. Please pass on this invitation to all Friends in your meeting interested in the future of our racial and migrant justice work!

Exploring the theology of Disney's "Soul"

The speaker at this month's St Albans PCN Britain meeting on Thursday 24th at 7.30 pm will be Gill Elliott, the group's Zoom facilitator. Gill will explore the theology of "Soul" - we are all souls who inhabit a body for a short period of time and space. Gill suggests that attendees may like to buy, borrow or whatever, Disney's “Soul” DVD before the meeting. However, if participants are unable to view the DVD then that should not be a hindrance to taking part in a discussion that has, for many progressives, a very different understanding to traditional Christianity's belief as to what happens beyond the grave. It sounds a mournful subject for a warm summer evening but there is much to discuss as many leading progressive speakers and writers do not always see eye to eye on the subject!

"It shall not be so among you": Recovering Leadership in the Church

David Hewlett is a British Anglican priest, Methodist minister, and academic specialising in practical theology. Since 2003, he has served as Principal of The Queen's Foundation, an ecumenical theological college in Birmingham. He previously served in parish ministry in the Diocese of St Albans and the Diocese of Truro, and taught at the Church of Ireland Theological Institute, at Trinity College, Dublin, on the South West Ministry Training Course, and at the University of Exeter.

In this talk he will reflect on the way leadership in the life of the Church is shaped by a general culture which includes an emphasis on hierarchical personal relationships, on the 'specialness' of calling, and on theologies of control, obedience and trust. He will explore whether and how such a culture makes more likely breaches and abuses of trust.
