Celebrating LGBT+ History Month
a chance to celebrate the lives and achievements of LGBT+ people from our past and presentGreetings for February, LGBT+ History Month.
LGBT+ History Month has taken place in the UK every February since 2005, organised by Schools Out UK, a campaigning group for LGBT+ people in education. It’s a chance to celebrate the lives and achievements of LGBT+ people from our past and present. Each year it takes a theme from the education curriculum - this year's theme is Peace, Reconciliation and Activism as 2019 marks 50 years since the Stonewall Riots, a pivotal moment in the LGBT+ civil rights movement.
This week is also Aromantic Spectrum Awareness Week which aims to share information and awareness about aromanticism. Someone who is aromantic does not experience romantic attraction to anyone, regardless of gender. For more information visit arospecawarenessweek.tumblr.com
As a community we have a history which is often little known and there is much to learn, much to celebrate and indeed much to mourn. Through raising awareness, discovering our history, and taking our places within it we can be liberated into life and to making history rather than cast adrift or told we are an aberration. But is this not also our spiritual journey? To discover our stories of who we are in God, uncover and own our history, take our place within it and to be liberated into life and adding our stories into this grand story? I'm reminded of Romans 9 where St Paul quotes Hosea:
'I will call them "my people" who are not my people; and I will call her "my loved one" who is not my loved one,' and, 'In the very place where it was said to them, "You are not my people," there they will be called "children of the living God."'
This month and every month may you hear God call you 'my loved one'!
