North Staffordshire Group Meeting – The origins of religion
Sunday 5 February 2017
How do we account for the existence of religion? Many in the West deem religion quite irrelevant. Marx dismissed it as the opium of the people, while Freud thought religion a universal obsessional neurosis. But obsessional or not, it is hard to deny that throughout human history religion appears to be well-nigh universal. Atheism is less our default setting and more the result of rejecting religious beliefs previously accepted.
But how do we explain the roots of religion ? Naturalistically, or does religion itself require a religious explanation ?
