Start Time:

Rev'd John Churcher

To obtain the Zoom link for this meeting, please email the group convenor, Andy Vivian, (see above).

John has subtitled his talk with these words: Context, context, context: We cannot know the historical Jesus but we can each create the Jesus that makes sense for us in our own time and place.

John has provided us with a 1600 word article which he’d like us to read, along with a set of questions we might like to peruse. You'll find the article in our Gloucestershire Resources section under the title, The Radical Jesus for Today. Please take a few minutes to read his article and to ponder the questions.

John's article is critical of the Church for being stuck on creeds and neglectful of compassion. He envisages new Christian communities which are based around informal groups rather than institutional churches. Like Simmonds he emphasises the role of compassion for the marginalised as the key Christian response. He will also consider whether Christians can avoid being 'compassioned out'. This should be a good sequel to our recent study of John Simmonds’ book, Jesus Then and Now.

John Churcher is a Methodist minister
