This conference will build on Marcus Borg’s session on Christian Mysticism at the CRC conference he led in April 2008. The main areas of exploration will be the relationship between mysticism and contemporary spiritual experience, the relationship between mysticism and radical theology, and the relationship between mysticism and resistance. Eley writes: ‘I am intrigued that spirituality’s harshest and most cynical critics fail to recognise that beyond the crystals and candyfloss there is a vital link between spirituality, rightly understood, and progressive faith and action’.
Eley has worked in religious radio for 25 years and was, for 15 years, the main producer of BBC Radio 4’s long-running weekly spiritual anthology, ‘Something Understood’. She has also been Editor of the ‘Sunday’ programme and ‘Thought for the Day’. She read English at the University of Edinburgh and has a Diploma in Applied Theology. She left broadcasting briefly in the 1990s to work for Oxfam. She has a longstanding personal involvement in the world of retreats and complementary therapies and is writing a book entitled ‘The Unmarked Path – Another Way of Being Faithful’.
