In an age of social contacts mediated by screens and algorithms, what is real community? And in an age when real community is threatened by globalisation and ecological destruction, what does it take to build community? Matt Carmichael seeks answers in the spheres of soil, soul and society. He finds inspiration in sacred texts, contemporary activists, and cultures which never forgot how to live in community.
Matt Carmichael is a schoolteacher, writer and activist from Leeds. He is co-author, with Alastair McIntosh, of Spiritual Activism: Leadership as Service, and he blogs for Ecohustler and other outlets. A founding director of Schumacher North, he’s campaigned on environmental, social and peace issues since the early 1990s. He has developed the Delta course for people interested in spirituality free of religious strictures.
…. No entry charge, but donations to cover costs will be requested. The day will open with the lecture, to be followed by workshops and panel discussion, to end by 3.15pm. Tea and coffee will be available.
The X43 bus running between Manchester and Skipton stops opposite the church. There is parking in nearby streets and car parks. (A train service runs on Saturdays between Bury and Rawtenstall.)
